5 things all PC laptop makers should be doing in 2020

Gambar
Spring is upon us, which means I'm cleaning and packing up laptop review units to send back. In the process, I've been reminiscing about what trends and features I like, and what I think some PC makers are missing. While there is no perfect laptop, Dell's recent XPS 13 (9300) comes the closest, thanks to a combination of some features other PC makers could stand to implement. Here are five things that all laptop makers should be doing, and a few they should be considering in 2020. Display aspect: 16:10 Years ago, Microsoft brought the 3:2 aspect ratio back from the dead in its Surface line. It started with Surface Pro 3 and it has since expanded it to all its PCs, including the massive Surface Studio. A 16:10 aspect falls between traditional 16:9 and 3:2 but leans more towards the latter. With the taller aspect, viewing web pages is more satisfying because you see more information. The same applies to using Word. I've been banging the drum on this topic f

Get Control Of Your Linux Laptop With TUXEDO Control Center

Gambar
PC manufacturer TUXEDO Computers — which you may be increasingly hearing about thanks to the Manjaro Linux laptop explosion — have developed a slick system utility called TUXEDO Control Center. In short, it allows you tune and manage all the various power settings of your laptop with one central app. There's also a dashboard that monitors your system fans, CPU and GPU loads and temperatures. For me, the true appeal of Tuxedo Control Center is the ridiculously easy way you can create custom thermal profiles. It comes with a few default ones which basically amount to "Performance, Balanced and Power Saving" but you can really dig in and limit the number of CPU cores, establish minimum and maximum CPU clock speeds, and tweak basic fan behavior. Plus you can separately tune each profile for plugged in or battery usage. And dark mode? Well you've gotta have dark mode! This is just version 1.0.1 but extra features are being planned like keyboard illumination

Apple will reportedly sell a new Mac laptop with its own chips next year

Gambar
Apple will start selling Macs that use in-house processors in 2021, based on ones in upcoming iPhones and iPad Pros, Bloomberg reported Thursday. The company is apparently working on three of its own chips, suggesting a transition away from traditional supplier Intel. The initial batch of custom chips won't be on the same level as the Intel ones used in high-end Apple computers, so they're likely to debut in a new type of laptop, the report noted. These processors could have eight high-performance cores and at least four energy-efficient cores, respectively codenamed Firestorm and Icestorm.  It isn't the first we've heard about Apple moving to a homemade processor. Rumors have been swirling since 2018, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reportedly said in Februa

Logitech's touchpad case turns your iPad into a laptop for a lot less than Apple's Magic Keyboard

It's great to have a trackpad for the iPad. With the trackpad support in iOS 13.4, I feel like the iPad has crossed over to being most of what I need in a computer-like device. There are still quirks and wish list items, but the ability to zip around with a trackpad (and edit) is a huge help for me. Razer Blade Stealth 13 gaming laptop gains speed bumps and design tweaks

Gambar
Nvidia's tiniest gaming laptop, the Razer Blade Stealth 13, gets a boost for 2020 with a higher-refresh screen option. It also gets a graphics processor update, new screen, lower-power memory and a fix for a big keyboard complaint. It's available now, starting at $1,799, which converts to about £1,470 or AU$2,870. Razer's Stealth 13 replaces the GeForce GTX 1650 CPU with the higher-powered 1650 Ti. It also upgrades the 1080p screen option to a 120Hz display with the same specs as the current version. Th

2020 iPad Pro Review: Don’t call it a laptop replacement

Gambar
The iPad is in many ways like the electric cars of the automotive world. Range anxiety is one of the biggest concerns for many EV buyers, which is why there are still so many gasoline engine cars on the road. Much the same, in laptops versus tablets, the biggest question is whether an iPad can do "enough" to replace a regular laptop. For would-be buyers of the 2020 iPad Pro, the most important question is likely whether it'll tick all – or at least most – of the boxes to supplant a traditional laptop. While I can't make that buying decision for you, I'd like to lay out what's new with the 2020 iPad Pro, why it's now the only "computer" I need with me on the road, and why the obsession with "replacement" may now miss the point. The history of the iPad For me, the idea (and now reality) of carrying around an ultra-portable personal computer or UMPC didn't start with Apple, but with Microsoft. Th

Many people are discovering that their favourite devices are not as reliable as they thought, and not equipped to handle the increased workload.  There's no need to panic though, because there are plenty of brands that are still offering good deals on impressive devices. ASUS Chromebook Flip C436 Review: A flexible laptop for our stay-at-home lives

Gambar
Lightweight as a laptop with a great keyboard • Kickstand mode is ideal for our video conferencing future • Smooth setup and performance • WiFi 6 inclusion is a nice bonus Holding it like a tablet is awkward • Slight touchscreen issues • Usual ChromeOS limitations • Pricey for a Chromebook The new ASUS Chromebook Flip is ideal for working from home in many ways, but a big price tag and a couple of small issues hold it back from greatness. There's no getting around it: Laptops are super important right now because we're all stuck at home. And though countless industries have slowed to a crawl during this pandemic, ASUS keeps on trucking with its newest laptop, the Chromebook Flip C436.  Though its feature set is admittedly more incremental than revolutionary, ASUS' hybrid Chromebook/tablet device could be a worthwhile option for anyone who needs a versatile laptop for both work and entertainment purposes. While the limitations of

Lenovo renames and revamps its Legion gaming laptop lineup

For the most part, Lenovo kept the spring refresh of its Legion gaming laptops and desktop relatively low key and under the hood, with the de rigueur updates to the latest Intel processors (and the addition of AMD Ryzen options), Nvidia GPUs and faster screens. The company did upgrade most of the systems with a new keyboard, dubbed "Legion TrueStrike" along with a new, bigger Precision trackpad and some fancier lighting.
